helping you help them

Supporting your child on their education journey is so important and there are so many things that you can do at home to help. It can be such a minefield and I will do my best to help and advise you after the sessions but in the meantime here are some things that you can do.

everyday tasks

Incorporating your child into everyday tasks can help in so many areas. Take the shopping, for example. When you next go shopping, encourage your child to write their own list. When in the store, get them to find the items from their list. If they are old enough, give them some money and have them work out the cost and the change they should receive. Through doing this, you are expanding their reading, writing, adding, subtracting and developing real life skills.

This is a great activity for all ages and all abilitites.

  • There are many online games to support maths. One that many educationists recommend is called Hit the Button. On that site there is a wealth of fun maths challenges to play.

  • One way to encourage writing is to make it relevant. Getting your child a notebook/scrapbook and encouraging them to keep a diary over a holiday period can be a great way to do this. My own girls loved doing this, every day they wrote a short paragraph and stuck in photos, postcards, wrist bracelets, tickets and many other memorabilia. Once the holiday was over and the book was complete, they loved sharing it with grandparents, teachers and even just with each other again and again.

  • Words are everywhere. So encouraging your child to sound out words wherever they see them, on cereal packets, street names, instructions for a game and so much more.

Reading to your child is vital. Try to make time to read daily TO your child. Children need to gain a love of reading before they are going to want to learn how to read. Make reading a special, cosy time where you both have 10 minutes snuggled together sharing a book.

Visit the library where you can borrow a pile of books at NO COST.
